Our clinic is comprised of multiple specialties, so if you are a patient of ours it’s quite likely you don’t recognize every face you may see when visiting us. From dermatology, to coordinated breast care, to weight loss surgery, we have many talented professionals within our clinic walls that we want to introduce to you! Megan Cleveland is our full-time, in house dietitian who oversees the Weight Loss Surgery program we offer at Midlands Clinic. She has technically worked with Midlands Clinic for just short of 10 years, but this year was awarded our annual Employee of the Year award, and so we feel she is deserving of introduction!
Megan is a Siouxland area native, growing up and attending school in Sergeant Bluff. She graduated high school and went to the University of Northern Iowa to pursue a biology major, but decided quickly that wasn’t the route for her. She always had an interest for medicine, but considering other passions of hers including food and being helpful to others, she decided to change direction and get into the dietetic program at UNI. After two years of the program in Cedar Falls, the school unfortunately dropped the dietetic major leaving Megan to reconsider her options. She ended up transferring to Iowa State to complete her degree and her resident training program there. Fun fact: she actually interned at the same medical center as two of our surgeons, Drs. Nemechek & Hegvik!
During her internship, Megan was assigned a project to research the dietitians in her home town. While conducting her research she found the Mercy Weight Loss Center in Sioux City, and spent some time there job shadowing and learning the ropes. Funnily enough, upon graduating her program and returning to the Siouxland area, she saw a job posting for a dietitian at Mercy Weight Loss Center and she began working part time! Dr. Rizk and Dr. Vollstedt worked with this weight loss center at that time and so began their long-lasting relationship with Megan. They have worked together for around 14 years, in fact! The Mercy Weight Loss Center did end up closing its doors in 2012, and that is when Megan officially became a Midlands employee.
Her passion for her job and the opportunity to educate, support, and change the lives of her patients is so evident in her work every day and is much of the reason she won the employee of the year award.
Outside of work, Megan enjoys spending time doing outdoor activities with her husband, Dusty. They like to golf, hike, and swim when the weather permits. Megan loves cooking and says she “reads cookbooks and magazines like novels” and uses the knowledge she has obtained over time to throw dishes together sans recipe, and no cuisine is off the table! Spending time with friends and family is important to her, and she loves to travel whenever she is able.
I asked Megan some rapid-fire questions to get to know her a little better, check them out for yourself!
Favorite thing to do in Sioux City? We like to golf in the SUX area when weather is nice! Since I am a big foodie, we like to check out new restaurants when we can, too.
Favorite place you’ve traveled? Probably Mexico, specifically Cozumel: I love the ocean and the weather and of course the food!
Are you into sports? Despite going to both UNI and ISU, I love the Hawkeyes! I love football particularly, but I also like rooting for the Cubs.
What’s your favorite music or artist? I like all genres – 80 and 90s country, 90s to 2000s rap and R&B, Guns & Roses, Eagles, Tom Petty, Mumford & Sons, to name a few. I loved the super bowl half time show!
Favorite concert attended? Red Hot Chili Peppers probably, but we recently saw Alabama at red rocks and that was a lot of fun, too.
Most binge-worthy TV show? I love Below Deck, love Greys Anatomy, The Office, Handmaids Tale
